Children Health Issues

The children of the East Portland neighborhoods that we here at Portland Urgent Care serve are not immune to the many child health issues plaguing children across the country. Today, more and more children are experiencing “adult” health conditions such as high cholesterol, diabetes and joint problems; some are being diagnosed with advanced stages of these conditions as early as their pre-teens. This is due in large part to a combination of a sedentary lifestyle and poor eating choices.

Lack of physical activity in children can be traced to many things, although television and video games certainly bear the brunt of the blame. Poor eating habits and overindulgence begin as a pattern in the very young years of childhood.

Babies and toddlers who are not presented with a well-balanced diet with items from all of the food groups are more likely to be overweight and even obese as they grow. Many children are also suffering from poor nutrition because of the foods they are eating, even though they may appear to be healthy and fit.

How can we at Portland Urgent Care help you keep the kids fit and healthy?

Start with regular check-ups and wellness visits, which include height and weight measurements. This can be an early indicator of problems with growth and development that could be caused by nutrition problems. We encourage screening for conditions and diseases such as diabetes, particularly if there is a family history, and our on-site lab can test for this and many other issues. We can also assist parents in achieving their own health goals. After all, the best lesson in children’s health is a good example.
