Food Allergies

Food allergy is an immune system reaction that occurs soon after eating a certain food. Even a tiny amount of the allergy-causing food can trigger signs and symptoms such as digestive problems, hives or swollen airways. In some people, a food allergy can cause severe symptoms or even a life-threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis.

Pets and Animal Dander

Pet allergy is an allergic reaction to proteins found in an animal's skin cells, saliva or urine. Signs of pet allergy include those common to hay fever, such as sneezing and runny nose. Some people may also experience signs of asthma, such as wheezing and difficulty breathing.

Weeds, Trees & Grasses

Grasses are the most common cause of allergy. Other common sources of weed pollen include sagebrush, pigweed, lamb's quarters and tumbleweed. Certain species of trees, including birch, cedar and oak, also produce highly allergenic pollen.

Diagnose your Allergy

To diagnose your allergy, our provider will use a skin prick test (SPT) to measure the presence of the IgE antibodies for the suspect allergen. The SPTs are needle free, pain free, produce immediate results, and can be done in the providers office. During the test, the provider places small amounts of solution containing the allergen on your forearm or your back. Using a small plastic applicator the provider gently “scratches” the skin to allow a tiny amount of solution to enter just below the skin surface. The scratching of the skin feels similar to a fingernail scratch.

Once the testing is completed the allergist will discuss your treatment plan. At each subsequent visit, you will receive a tiny amount of the specific substance or substances that trigger your allergic reactions. Your body responds by gradually, developing immunity or tolerance to the allergen. Improvement of symptoms can be noticed within a few weeks of treatment. Continuing your treatment most often leads to a complete cure.
