Understanding Tuberculosis and Why Testing is Important
Tuberculosis, also known as TB, is an infectious disease that affects the lungs but can also spread to the spine, brain, or kidneys. It’s caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria, and if untreated it can lead to serious complications and could even be fatal. An early tuberculosis test and diagnosis are vital to reduce the risk of transmitting it to others and to prevent transmission of TB to others.
Portland Urgent Care provides two types of TB tests. One is the Mantoux tuberculosis screening skin test and the other is a TB blood test (interferon-gamma release assays or IGRAs) that measures your immune system’s response to TB antigens.
Tuberculosis symptoms slowly develop and can make early detection difficult. Symptoms may include:
If you’ve been exposed to a person who has active TB, or who has traveled recently where TB is prevalent, you should get tested, even if you don’t have symptoms.
One of our healthcare providers at Portland Urgent Care will review your medical history, your symptoms, and your potential exposure to TB, and then recommend either a skin test or a blood test. The skin test injects tuberculin under the skin of your forearm and checks it for a potential reaction 48-72 hours later. The blood test measures the immune system's response to TB bacteria. A chest X-ray may be done if either the skin test or blood test shows a positive result.
When your TB skin test or blood test shows up as positive, it means you’ve been infected with tuberculosis bacteria. But it doesn’t mean you have active TB disease. Your body’s immune system has reacted to the TB bacteria. You’ll need a chest X-ray to find out if you have active TB disease or a latent TB infection. If your test is negative, you haven’t been infected with TB bacteria. People with weakened immune systems or those recently exposed sometimes get a false negative test result. You might need more testing if you have a negative test and still have TB symptoms or if you are at high risk of exposure. The doctor at Portland Urgent Care will then determine the next steps to take for treatment.
If you’re experiencing severe or worsening symptoms of TB, such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, or coughing up blood, you need emergency medical care. If you have a seizure, a high fever, or sudden confusion, along with a severe headache, see a physician immediately because TB could be affecting your brain. Additional concerning symptoms include weakness, numbness, loss of feeling in your limbs, night sweats, or unexplained weight loss. Delaying treatment could lead to life-threatening complications. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to manage the infection.
